Scandinavia is made up of the kingdoms of Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Many times, people have thought that Finland and Iceland are part of Scandinavia. They are not, but all five countries are referred to as the Nordic Countries. Scandinavia and the Nordic region cover much of Northern Europe. The Scandinavian Peninsula is the largest peninsula in Europe extending from above the Arctic Circle to the North and Baltic Seas. The Scandinavian languages take their roots from the North Germanic language.
Denmark is the southernmost Scandinavian country. It is also its smallest country. Denmark is on the Jutland peninsula and has over 400 islands, some of which are linked to the mainland by bridges. The official language is Danish and its capital city is Copenhagen. It has been referred to as one of the happiest countries in the world.
Norway is the northernmost country in Europe. It is made up of many islands and fjords. The official language is Norwegian and its capital city is Oslo. Norway has been called the “Land of the Vikings” and the “Land of the Midnight Sun.”
Sweden is the largest of the Scandinavian countries in regards to the land size. It also has the largest population. Sweden has numerous lakes throughout. The official language is Swedish and the capital city is Stockholm.
